Magnet Selection: Not All Neodymium Is Equal

The heart of every magnetic closure box is the neodymium (NdFeB) magnet. We stock three grades, each for different applications:

Every magnet batch arrives with a supplier CoA (Certificate of Analysis) and undergoes incoming QC: Gauss meter verification, dimensional check to ±0.1mm, and 3-coat nickel plating inspection to prevent corrosion in humid shipping conditions.

The Greyboard Foundation: 1.5mm to 3.0mm

The magnet sits in a recess machined into the greyboard base. This is precision work:

• Board thickness: 1.5mm for compact jewelry boxes, 2.0mm standard, 3.0mm for large format
• Magnet pocket depth: Calculated so the magnet face sits 0.2–0.3mm below the wrapping paper surface — close enough for strong attraction, deep enough to avoid visible bulges
• Tolerance: ±0.1mm on pocket position — critical because a misaligned magnet won’t meet its steel counterpart on the lid

Our Bobst flatbed die-cutters handle greyboard up to 3.0mm cleanly. For boxes above 350mm, we use dual-magnet configurations with symmetric positioning verified on a CNC jig.

The Wrap: 157gsm Art Paper to PU Leather

The outer wrap does two jobs: aesthetics and mechanical. Paper weight matters:

The Steel Plate: The Other Half of the Equation

The lid contains a steel strike plate — not a second magnet. Why? Steel plates are thinner (0.3–0.5mm), never demagnetize, cost less, and eliminate polarity issues. A single N42 magnet + 0.4mm steel plate generates consistent 2.5–2.8 kg closure force — enough to keep a 500g lid securely shut through shipping vibration.

Closure Force Testing Protocol

Every new design undergoes our 7-point closure test:

1. Static pull force: Digital force gauge, peak hold mode — must exceed 1.8× lid weight
2. Drop test: 1m drop onto concrete, 6 faces — closure must hold
3. Cyclic open/close: 2,000 cycles at 60/min — force degradation < 15%
4. Temperature cycle: -10°C to +60°C, 48 hours — no demagnetization, no wrap delamination
5. Humidity exposure: 85% RH at 40°C, 72 hours — no nickel plating corrosion
6. Vibration: ISTA 1A truck simulation — closure remains engaged
7. Aesthetic inspection: No visible magnet shadow through wrap under 5000K lighting
